By the by, Koumyou has healing and assorted other magic powers. He's not one to use them, generally, and I'll always ask explicitly in advance. However, if you need to opt out in advance, go for it. I don't mind, and it won't impact CR.

Character Details
Canon Point: Shortly after naming his successor
Species: Human
Timeline of Important Events in Canon History:
  • At the age of 22, the young monk Houmei began elite training to become one of the five highest ranking priests charged with the guardianship of the holy sutras whose magic created the Heaven and Earth.
  • Houmei developed close ties and friendships with many of the men there, but especially two that would eventually ascend to the Sanzo priesthood alongside him.
  • Two years later, he is named Koumyou Sanzo and is the youngest ever to be given the title. He is given the Seiten sutra to use and protect.
  • In the years that followed, he traveled. At some point, his dear friend, Tenkai Sanzo, dies and he takes on the unusual duty of guarding the Maten sutra as well.
  • At the age of 35, he is drawn to rescue an abandoned infant from the Yangtze River. He names the boy Kouryuu and begins to raise him as if he were his own son.
  • Four years later, he is called to attend to his other friend from training. Goudai Sanzo, terminally ill and near death, wished for him to oversee his succession rites. He meets a young man, Kenyuu, and ultimately names him as Goudai's successor.
  • Charged by the gods to travel for a year with the newly named Ukoku Sanzo, he leaves Kouryuu in the care of the monks of his home temple.
  • At the completion of the year, he resumes his position at his home temple and raising Kouryuu. From time to time, Ukoku visits and they discuss philosophy among other things.
  • At the age of 47, Koumyou names Kouryuu as his official successor. He gives the boy the religious name of Genjo Sanzo. Shortly thereafter, the temple is attacked and he willfully allows one of the bandits to kill him as he protects his foster son.

Personality: Koumyou's major motivation throughout his life is a clear desire to guide others. Only interfering when absolutely necessary, he walks a path that embraces the Zen Buddhist ideal of freedom from worldly desires while offering advice and insight to those that have yet to find where they're going. Surprisingly enough, sometimes he's even quite good at it.

While Koumyou is among the most exalted priests of his world's version of Buddhism, he's not very good at being what one might expect. He wears his hair long where other holy men might otherwise shave, and enjoys worldly pleasures without the faintest hint of guilt. His favored pastimes are taking in nature as he smokes a pipe, or stargazing with a bottle of a sake. The general Buddhist prohibitions for a monk have never seemed to apply to him, and he has even killed in his lifetime, but only in dire circumstances.

Good-natured, Koumyou is known to be something of a natural at a number of things. For example, magic has always come easy to him, so much so that he had trouble memorizing Buddhist scriptures that others would commit to memory. Unlike his peers, he didn't need them to cast holy magic, and his attention often drifted when he was trying to learn them. In truth, even at age 47, his grasp on Buddhist teachings can be somewhat shaky. He's quite alright with this, as he takes a tact that he really shouldn't be teaching anyone at all anyway. Instead, he tends to exemplify the lessons through how he lives his life and his often opaque advice.

He is also a natural fool. He can be helplessly ditzy at times, forgetting simple things and failing to take time to care for his own health. He would skip giving lectures in order to fold paper airplanes with his son, and seems to often misunderstand what others ask of him. Yet, despite this failing, he finds life lessons to offer to others in the contrast between an orange paper airplane and the blue sky, or the nature of birds migrating. There's no telling if he may offer a profound insight or a baffling non sequitur.

Compassionate yet distant, he is deeply invested in other people. He despises monks that hold themselves apart from the people, locking themselves away with their books and their prayers. Life is meant to be lived in his mind, and he encourages it. For one reason or another, he doesn't seem to ever pass judgement on other people either. Rather, everyone earns the live they will be given through karma, and he rarely sees reason to find fault in others. Tellingly, he's terribly fond of Ukoku Sanzo, the man that killed one of his closest friends among others. Instead, he feels a great sympathy for the complex motivations that drive him, and obliquely attempts to influence his path.

It is rare that he loses his smile, but it can be dangerous when he's pushed too far. While it takes a great deal to provoke him, he can be coldly vicious in his retaliation and respond with overwhelming force. He'd much prefer to settle issues without violence if at all possible, as it's always better to become friends over sake than it is to leave bodies in his wake. He'll go to extremes if he believes it is the right thing, however, and he's proved himself by putting his own life on the line for a greater good. Even then, however, he was able to die of his own volition with a smile.

    Abilities, Magic and Supernatural Skills/Afflictions:
Magical Abilities - In a world where concentration and chi fuel magic, Koumyou is quite possibly without peer. Unlike most people in his world, he's able to focus his power instantly without either mudras or mantras. He can use his power to manipulate people's bodies in ways such as sealing their movement or causing physical harm or healing without touching them. He also demonstrates a wide variety of elemental manipulations such as creating a dragon out of water, a comically muscularly proportioned snowman, and great blazing fires. In addition, he has a supernatural physical strength and constitution.

Seiten and Maten - His powers cover the spectrum of yin and yang. The Seiten granted him the ability to heal and restore on a grand scale, and also to create light. The Maten came with the ability to purify and destroy, and to break darkness. (These have a physical manifestation as scriptures, but are functionally tied to his soul and recreate themselves if destroyed. Essentially, they're a part of him, but I don't know how that would be handled.)

    Dragon & Magical Element
    Elemental Alignment:
Light - He has been compared to the moon, a guiding light when there is otherwise darkness. Something of a motif for him, he offers a certain indirect, distant illumination of a path for others to find their way.
Shadow - There isn't light without shadow, and being a necessary opposing force for something else comes rather naturally to him. There is safety in shadow, after all.
Water - If there's anyone that goes with the flow, Koumyou does. Working around obstacles and carrying on regardless, this is another element that would work well.

Dragon: Mochi is a white shoulder sized dragon with a serpentine body with a Chinese dragon style face and long tail. Covered in silky white fur, it has bright purple eyes. It has no wings in the traditional sense, but sacs hidden by its fur that it can inflate to fly. (Or, perhaps more accurately, float ineptly.) It has three pairs of legs, the foremost acting primarily as little clawed hands as it uses the rear pairs to walk upon, but each have three digits with an opposed thumb. Its preference is to stick close to people rather than partake of the wild as it can be rather clumsy, and it eats an omnivorous diet with a clear preference for sweet fruits and confections.

Its dragon egg was delicate and quite nearly as small as a robin's with a thin, white shell marked with gold striations.

Personality traits inherited from Character Bond:
  • Ditzy
  • Compassionate
  • Vicious when provoked

    30 Day Opt-In

In the 30 days that your character has been in the city, how have they spent their time? He wanders and chats amiably with anyone he can. On occasion, he manages to accidentally preach, but he's far more interested in meeting people and learning about their culture. He has also been teaching Mochi how to hunt using various confections and a makeshift sort of fishing pole. It's not going well, but they're having a good time with it.

Has the dragon hatched yet? Did their egg hatch immediately or was there time between locating their egg in the Heart of Nuren and the dragon's hatchday? How much have they grown? Mochi hatched after a week to his great delight, and is already nearly half-grown.

How have your character's interactions with the Remnants within the city been? Koumyou loves interacting with the locals. He approaches them with a distinct interest in their lives and local culture, and spends a great deal of time talking about everything and nothing. His time seems to be spent mostly with the lower-classes, though he has absolutely no sense of social consciousness.

How have your character's interactions with the Touched within the city been? From a world where a race of people known as the youkai, Koumyou is perfectly at home with the Touched. Like the Remnants, he treats most everyone he meets as if they are old friends.

Has your character been living in the mountain cavern homes of Upper Nuren or within the housing areas of Lower Nuren? Lower Nuren suits him just fine, and he has tucked himself away in a little place above a particularly illicit shop. He seems to take no notice of the unsavory habits of his neighbors.
